The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
