The Boss Enzo Maresca Describes Lead-Up Time as The 'Toughest 48 Hours' at the Club

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca remarked that the build-up to Saturday's triumph against Everton was "the toughest 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.

The 44-year-old delivered a puzzling message in his after-game media briefing despite earning a 2-0 win at home thanks to strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those crucial points lifted Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, potentially lightening the mood following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the team's winless run to four fixtures.

However, when asked about the full-back's contribution and overall display, Maresca unexpectedly shared his annoyance over the previous 48-hour period at the organization.

"The way the squad are eager to develop has been superb and this is the explanation why I applaud them - because with a host of issues, they are excelling after a complicated week," he said.

"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because many people failed to back us."

Pressed on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City boss added: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When questioned if he meant people within at Chelsea, he replied: "In general. In general," before specifying when queried if it was aimed at fans or the media: "I adore the fans and we are very content with the fans."

Injury and Disciplinary Woes

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing injury and disciplinary issues, noting they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, as well as being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two serious injuries.

"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are performing exceptionally. Today was five games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer available, we said many times that he's our top player but we play almost all season minus our best player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to recognize because the work from the players is fantastic."

Chelsea's win over Everton consolidated their standing in fourth in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle to come next week.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was ambiguous who or what caused Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the worst of his tenure as Chelsea manager.

In that window, the coach had traveled back with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at Cobham, attended a pre-game press briefing where he seemed at ease, and engineered a victory over an in-form Everton side.

It was unclear whether any particular media reports had unsettled him, if social media discourse played a role, or if it was something more significant from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an matter related to the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester in July last year.
