The US President Urges the Thai government to Reaffirm Commitment to Cambodian Ceasefire with Tariff Warnings

Washington has exerted influence on the Thai administration to recommit to a truce deal with the Cambodian side, warning that trade negotiations could be halted as attempts are made to prevent a Donald Trump-brokered ceasefire arrangement from collapsing.

Border Tensions Escalate

Earlier this week, Thailand declared it was suspending the ceasefire deal, alleging Cambodian forces of laying fresh landmines along the shared border, among them an incident that reportedly wounded a Thai soldier on duty, who suffered a foot amputation in the explosion.

Since then, a fatality occurred and multiple individuals injured by gunfire along the border between the two nations, raising concerns of a new round of tit-for-tat fighting.

US Trade Pressure

On Saturday, a Thai foreign ministry spokesperson informed reporters that a letter from the U.S. trade office announcing the pause in trade negotiations was obtained on the previous evening.

He quoted the letter as saying that trade negotiations – which are focusing on a 19 percent American duty – could restart once the Thai government reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out the mutual truce agreement.

“Trade talks are ongoing and distinct from frontier matters,” stated a different official representative.

Trump’s Tariff Threat

Speaking to the press aboard the presidential plane as he traveled to the Sunshine State on the end of the week, the US leader implied that he had employed tariff warnings in discussions with the south-east Asian leaders.

He stated, “Today, I prevented a conflict using tariffs, the menace of duties,” adding, “they are performing well. I believe they will be okay.”

Ceasefire Agreement Background

The President witnessed the finalization of a ceasefire agreement, conducted in Malaysian territory this October, and has promoted it as one of multiple agreements around the world he claims should win him the Nobel Peace prize.

The most severe clashes in a decade between Thai and Cambodian troops erupted in July, with exchanges of fire, shelling and aerial attacks causing numerous fatalities and 300,000 displaced.

Longstanding Border Dispute

Thailand and Cambodia have a longstanding border dispute that originates from disagreements over colonial-era maps created by French cartographers. Historic shrines along the border are claimed by both sides.
